About Athens in London

NHS OpenAthens is a username and password authentication system provided by EduServ.  The NHS in England uses this system to protect access to electronic information resources which have been purchased for eligible users.  The product used by the NHS is called OpenAthens MD.

In London, OpenAthens administration is divided into three tiers: regional, sector and local, with 4 sub-sections:

  • Health Education South London - NHS & Public Health staff in South West & South East London boroughs
  • Health Education North West London - NHS & Public Health staff in North West London boroughs
  • Health Education NC & NE London - NHS & Public Health staff in NC & NE London boroughs
  • London Athens organisations including social care, non-NHS provider orgs and non-NHS eligible staff

Each London sector is co-ordinated by lead OpenAthens administrators (Sector administrator), and contains the local OpenAthens organisations for eligible staff, including  NHS Trusts, based in that sector.

All NHS Trusts in London have an OpenAthens administrator account and a local administrator.  Further information about OpenAthens administration and the role of the administrator is available  in the Notes and Standards for NHS Athens Local Administrators.

The Responsibilities of National, Regional, Sector and Local NHS OpenAthens administrators November 2014

The Athens Administrators Group is a network of local administrators in London, supporting the administration processes  of the NHS OpenAthens system.  Two meetings are held every year, organised by the London Athens administrator.

The London OpenAthens administrator attends the quarterly National Regional OpenAthens Administrators Group meetings, liaising with sector and local administrators about issues discussed at these meetings as well as feeding back changes and developments to the system and processes.
